Excerpts From The Book:

"Going down a rabbit hole of contemplation Alistair, being typically Alistair, couldn't help but get philosophical; How do reasons work on a person? How do words get other people to see the world one's own way and to willingly discard their own?
Do they persuade like a cordial invite from a sunny day? Want to come out and play?
Do they coerce like a rainstorm that begs you to find shelter? How foolish you would look in the rain.
Or do they force like a lightning strike just yards from you causing you to leap away? Did you really have a choice?
Persuasion, coercion, force--is there really a difference? And if he couldn't say for sure, wouldn't he have to admit that they work as mysteriously as all those magic spells his type of reasoning tries to belittle?

"The darkness made Alistair's eyesight less and less reliable in distinguishing objects from
shadow which, he remembered learning, made the hearing more acute to compensate, and it
made sense to him that the forest's bloodthirsty racket soared to an insufferable volume. With his senses shifting the bulk of their duties to the audible for navigation, Alistair mapped the sweep of the landscape not by blunt objects, but by the distances of the sources of the ominous howling, hissing, bellowing and baying.

" The bugs lulled into a theater hush.
"Come sit with me," said Thor to Alistair after they finished their dinner and cleaned the pans.
This was one of the moments of the trip had hoped for before coming. Enveloped in a shimmering firelight that acted as some sort of shield against the nocturnal forces, and about to listen to a legend that was the source of so much dread to the ears it crept into, was a situation that was exactly what he had in mind while getting excited for the outing. It was a feeling unlike any other to have reality meet the conditions of a fantasy, the shape of his imagination fitting perfectly in the occasion.

Meet the Young Pinkertons
Alistair Doolittle
His theory is that a well-structured and analytical mind helps to eliminate one’s own biases resulting in more objective and reasoned outcomes. All for the sake of finding one’s way in a world that can be anything but those things.

Rufus Garrity
He has a passion for all things ancient, classical, archaic, and retro; In short, history. As a source of much mirth, he’s found that exploring different cultures, societies, and historical periods has the really cool effect of fostering empathy and understanding of diverse perspectives.
